Delaware blows out W&M

Posted by TTHS on 31st August 2007

I’ll admit it, I am recycling a title from basketball season, just taking out the “!?!?!?!?!?!”.

That was pretty rough tonight, the defense decided it didn’t plan on tackling Omar Cuff who was flat-out incredible. No matter how much the D helps you you’ve got to be pretty good to rack up 244 yards and 7, count ‘em, 7 touchdowns. Payton award?

The D also had trouble with those short screens. Seemed every attempted screen went for 35 plus yards. The Tribe D-Line got dominated, and even when they made a stop it was still 4 yards.

The kicking game was also pretty bad. That 35 yard FG Pate missed was probably 15 yards to the left. And he also had some pretty terrible kickoffs, to the 35 or thereabouts.

But, breaking news, there were some positives.

Jake was incredible. Completed 63% of his passes for 433 yards! Haven’t seen that out of a Tribe QB for a while. 2 touchdowns too, and another on the ground.

The receivers were also steller. DJ McAulay had 162 yards plus a TD and stepped in for Joe Nicholas very well. Unfortunately, he got injured late in the game, he really can’t seem to stay on the field. Hopefully he is back for next week as he is really blossoming, VMI couldn’t come at a better time. Drew Atchison was also great, they couldn’t find an answer to him. He dropped a few passes but still ended up with 139 and a TD. It is great knowing if you lob it up to him he has a 75% chance to pull it down, he is incredibly athletic and fast for his size. Archer also played well with 5 catches for 58 yards, which is slightly surprising since he spent most of the fall at QB. Talk about a team player.

The running game never really got going. Holmes averaged 3.1 yards per carry and that needs to get better. Marriner was very good though, it will be fun to see him play for the next few years. 5.2 YPC and a long of 38 on kickoff returns.

That’s all I got for now, will be interested to see how the weekend plays out, especially that UNC/JMU game. I am eager to see how Landers does.

Go Tribe!

Joe Nicholas Out for Thursday Night’s Game

VG

This definitely hurts our shot tomorrow night, but it would be even more crippling if he were out any longer. We need some guys to step up tomorrow night, namely Mack and McAualay.

Previewing Delaware

Posted by TTHS on 29th August 2007

After 9 months wait it is good to be back blogging football style! I’ll jump right into the first ever CAA football game.

Delaware looks to return another potent offense this season, only losing star TE Ben Patrick. Last year the Hens scored over 20 points in 9 of their 11 games, averaging 357 yards per. Most this was due to Pittsburgh transfer quarterback Joe Flacco, who came close to 3000 yards and had 18 TDs compared to 10 INTs. He completed 63 percent of his passes and averaged 253 yards per game. He is at least the second best QB in the A-10, but may be vulnerable if pressure is applied which will be his big test in the season opener.

The Hens also return a strong RB, in 12th year senior Omar Cuff. Cuff battled injuries last year, only playing in 7 games, rushed for 541 yards, and I think the most impressive stat, in 124 attempts compiled only 6 negative yards. The fact that Cuff hasn’t compiled any wear this season could be a major disadvantage to the Tribe, as this may be one of the only games this year he is 100%.

Aaron Love is the Hens top returning receiver, the only upper classmen of the bunch. He led the team in receiving yards last year with over 700, and was second to only Ben Patrick in catches. He is one of their big-play threats, and should get the majority of the catches. The other 2 starting wideouts look to be Mark Duncan, the biggest in the unit at 5-11, and Kervin Michaud, who was third on the team in catches and receiving yards last year. They have some bigger options for red-zone situations in Tommie Crosby(6′5″) and Ryan Finnegan(6′4″). Robbie Agnone and Josh Baker will take Ben Patrick’s place at TE, and I have heard the KC Keeler likes this combination even more than Patrick.

The offensive line will be an experienced one this year. 3 seniors return, 2 of which are over 290, with a junior and a sophomore. How they play will dictate the game, and if they can get Flacco time he will cut up the defense.

The defensive line returns 3 starters. Jeremy Kametz is the only senior, and will play the tackle position. He had 34 tackles last year and 1 sack, plus 5 TFLs, and started in all 11 games. Right tackle Manny Marshall only started in 5 games last year and because of that only had 10 tackles. He plugs the gaps at 288, and had a half a sack last season. Matt Marcorelle is an interesting player, the only player in UDel history to be captain as a sophomore. Last year he was injured during the first game of the season(Albany), and was granted a medical redshirt. As a freshman he had 5 sacks and 10 TFLs, which have both Keeler and Hens fans excited. Ronald Talley will take up the other DE spot, a transfer who started 5 games at ND last year. They both have some obstacles to overcome, but have a good shot at being all-CAA or maybe even all-americans.

The Hens linebackers are led by MLB Erik Johnson. Johnson started in 10 of the 11 games he played last year, and led the team with 3 sacks and 9.5 TFLs. He was second on the team in tackles, and looks to be the strong point of the D. Tim Prindle will also take a linebacker spot, and while he played in 8 games last year he really didn’t get to show much. Junior Johnathon Smith is a UConn transfer who logged minutes in every game the past 2 years, and as much talent as you will see on this level as he had 15 tackles as a freshman against Rutgers in 2004.

The defensive backs will a key in this game as the Tribe will need to be very successful through the air to win it. Fred Andrew is the top returning DB, starting in 8 of 11 games last year and bringing down 2 interceptions. He was 5th on the team in tackles and will be the leader of the secondary. Delaware is throwing another inexperienced player into the fire with redshirt freshman Anthony Walters. Walters is big at 6-1, 190, but has a junior in Marvin McKinne waiting to snap up PT if he sputters. Sophomore Anthony Bratton will play the strong safety position, and he is also has big-time size at 6-2. He saw the field in 5 games last year but did not get a start. The free safety spot has been given to sophomore Charles Graves, who played in the same 5 games Bratton did but picked up 2 starts. The secondary has very little experience as a whole and will be one of the places the Tribe needs to exploit.

UD has several game changers on special teams. Receivers Kervin Michaud and Aaron Love are both very good returners, with a chance to take one to the house at any moment. The Hens return their punter, Stuart Kenworthy, which should give them the upper hand in the field position battle as David Miller didn’t look the best for the Tribe in the scimmages. They do have a new starting kicker, however, with Jon Striefsky. Whoever steps up between the Hens’ Striefsky and the Tribe’s Brian Pate could very well decide the outcome, similar to the Hens last trip to Williamsburg.

I see the Tribe having a slight advantage on defense, with Derek Cox, Josh Rutter, Michael Pigram, and Adrian Tracy all returning as stars of the D. However, the edge is slim, and the Hens have a well-oiled machine of an offense which I don’t see the Tribe being able to stop. Hens win in a high scoring game.

Tribe Football Season Preview

Posted by TTHS on 27th August 2007

Coming off a tough season, the Tribe kicks off a brutal schedule this coming Thursday, with the first ever Colonial Athletic Association game against Delaware.

For the Tribe to have a bounce-back season, the offense will need to be much improved. That starts with the QB, and redshirt-Junior Jake Phillips. Phillips struggled in his starts last year, completing less than 50% of his passes, and throwing only 5 touchdowns compared to 3 interceptions, but has the potential to be a spectacular team leader and does everything well. He is very elusive in the pocket and spent the offseason in Williamsburg, seemingly determined to take the starting job and run with it. His stats were certainly effected by a weak offensive line last season, and more time in the pocket will only make him better. If he falters, expect Senior Mike Potts to step in. The Delaware native is the best passer on the team, but doesn’t have the speed of the other QB competitors.

Running back will also be a critical position this season. Elijah Brooks, last season’s team captian and star player, is gone and it looks like 3 players will be splitting carries. DeBrian Holmes is believed to be the starter, and he has been very solid in the last 2 years behind Brooks. He is very quick and good in the passing game, plus has a career average of 5.3 ypc to boot. In the offseason he has worked on adding to his size, and is a very good breakout candidate. He should be able to hold down the position, and has the potential of a top RB if he gets his blocks. The second candidate is Courtland Marriner, who will probably be the fastest player in every game we play this year. Marriner has explosive speed(4.4 40 time) and is as strong as anybody his size on the team. Expect him to make an impact both as a halfback and on kick/punt returns. Finally, it looks like Tony Viola will get time in short-yardage situations. Viola, a 6′1″/216 Senior, is tough to stop in the red zone and will do anything he can to get on the field(also will be on special teams). All in all, expect the Tribe to be as good if not better at tailback this season.

Receiver will be one of the strong points of this Tribe team, with 4 strong wide-outs. Senior Joe Nicholas will surely lead the corps, as he has lead the team for the past 2 seasons. His route-running and sure hands will be a consistency the Tribe will need on Offense. Another plus from Jake Phillips becoming the QB is that RJ Archer, last years second leading receiver, will go back to that position. Archer can provide some big plays, which is shown in his 15 yards per catch, and had overall good numbers for a convert with 45 ypg. Expect to see some gadget plays with him this year, and overall improved play with experience. Junior Elliot Mack is also expected to step up this year, coming off a difficult season. Mack started strong last year, but hardly made an impact on the team towards the middle of the season. Because of that, he only caught 20 passes last year and averaged just 23 ypg. He did, however, come back towards the end of the season and was an asset to the team on reverses and other plays where he could get into the open field. Expect a break out year from Mack. DJ McAulay is the 4th strong receiver on the Tribe, and he is the downfield threat. He spent 3 games on the pine last year due to injuries, but averaged 15 yards per catch when he was on the field and has the talent to be an all-conference caliber guy.

Last year this was easily the team’s weak spot, but I have heard from several outlets that the offensive line will be much improved this year. The line will be made up of 4 upperclassmen(3 Seniors, 1 Junior) and a Sophomore who played in every game last year. Leadership is supposed to come out of Right Tackle Brad Stewart who was named team Co-Captain this spring. Seniors Brent Cochran and Justin Oliver will make up the left side of the line, both returning starters, and the center spot will be filled with Redshirt-Junior Luke Hiteshew. EDIT: I have just gotten word that DL Kyle Allison has converted to OL, and is starting. Jimmye must be pretty comfortable with his starters on DL if that is the case.

The defensive line should be the youngest position on the team this year, entirely made up of underclassmen. The good news, however, is that 2 of the defenses 5 returning starters are on the line, including Freshman stud Adrian Tracy. Tracy started in all 11 games last year, and ended the season with 6 sacks and 15.5 TFLs. He also forced 2 fumbles and should be a star, very soon. CJ Herbert also started in every game this year, but only had 1 sack on the season and 30 tackles. He played a lot of DT last year, but will move to end this season. He provided a boost on special teams last year in blocking 2 kicks. The tackle positions are up in the air, currently being held down by Derek Toon and Sean Lissemore.

The Linebackers have the potential to be a strong unit this year if they can stay healthy. Josh Rutter will be the anchor of the unit at Middle Linebacker, and hopefully will be as strong as ever after missing the final 8 games of last year with a knee injury. He led the team in tackles 2 years ago as a freshman, and always seems to be around the ball. Michael Pigram was a pleasant surprise that came out of last season, as he was second on the team in tackles and added 4.5 TFLs and 3 forced fumbles. The combination of him and Rutter could be scary for opposing offenses for the next 2 years. Senior TJ O’Neill will be the vet of the crew, after being moved to DL last year. O’Neill had a little trouble with injuries last year, but has the experience and talent to play well anywhere. These 3 guys have had injury troubles in the past, and with the lack of depth in the Linebackers they will need to stay on the field.

The deepest position on defense will be the defensive backs. Derek Cox will be the leader of the defense, after being named Co-Captain, an honor that is not very often given to a Junior. Cox looks to be the next Tribe shut-down corner, and will do everything he can for the team including returning kicks. Max Harris is one of 2 true sophomores on the team, and has all the tools to be great. He is the hard-hitter on the defense, and has the potential to break out this year, but currently is being pushed for his spot by Terrell Wells. RS Sophomore Robert Livingston is an interesting player, a transfer from Western Michigan who is expected to start this year. Every report of him has been glowing. He tackles well and has the speed and tools for the position, and is described in the media guide as the “Quarterback of the defense”. Expect him to be a solid contributor with the chance to be very good. The final starter in the secondary will be true sophomore David Caldwell, who saw time on special teams last year. He will not be the shut down defender, but has the size and ability to make things happen on defense. He was also impressive a a punt returner last year. If he sputters at all 2 very capable players in David Houff and Michael Alvarado will be waiting to take his place.

The kicking game looks to be inconsistent at best this year. We were fed the information last year that David Miller was going to be great, soon, but he lost the PK job to Brian Pate in the spring. Miller will still be punting, but for every good kick the 2 of them had there was also a bad one. I am excited about the kick returns though, as we will really get to see Courtland Marriner do his thing. He is not only one of the fastest football players, but one of the fastest people in the state, and was flat out electric in Fall practice.

Overall, this is a rebuilding year. We definitely have a chance to be good, but with JMU, UD, VT, and UMass on the schedule, not to mention Towson, playoffs are very unlikely. I am looking at 6 wins with W’s over Liberty(in a close one), VMI, Villanova, Hofstra, and an upset somewhere along the road(Am thinking UD or JMU). The key is whether we get solid line play on both sides of the ball, and if we do this team could have a winning year.

And we have a QB

While I love the potential Archer has, JL knows he needs to win now and with how Phillips’ played this fall it was looking more and more like a slam dunk.

Will try to do a season preview tomorrow and a UDel one sometime this week.

QB Situation

Posted by TTHS on 20th August 2007

A decision is coming on wednesday, and it looks like it is down to 2, Phillips or Archer. At this point I am okay with either as Phillips has looked very good so far, but I am still pulling for Archer. The youngest with the most potential, and possibly the best right now. Once the decision is official I plan on writing a detailed season preview, plus a UD preview.

Go Tribe.

You can smell it in the air

Posted by TTHS on 8th August 2007

Whether by seeing all the articles in the Daily Press and Gazette, turning the calender from July to August, seeing people older than 11 playing at Zable, or looking at that little counter to my left, the signs are clear that football is here.

Unfortunately, this year I was not able to do my media day interviews, which is a bummer since it was a lot of fun last year, but I have several articles to disect and a preview will be going up soon, as I have my media guide.

Also, there will be a lack of updates from August 10-17, as I will be at the beach without internet access, but shortly after that I will get up my preview.

“I’m hoping after about 10 days to two weeks we’ll make the call as to what order we want to go in,” Tribe coach Jimmye Laycock said hours before the first preseason practice Monday.  “It would be a lot easier if one of them wasn’t doing well.

So we have a QB decision coming between August 16-20. All I ask is we have no 2-headed monster, as it never works. People constantly point to Florida last year, but fail to realize it involved 90% of Chris Leak and very little Tim Tebow. But that is as much as I will talk about the BCS. Because this is a strictly FCS blog.

“Whether it’s an unequivocal starter, I don’t know,” Laycock said.  “I don’t want to get into a drawn out type thing.  With that said, it will be close enough that whomever is the starter, if he’s not playing at the level we need it again could be a situation where somebody else will come in. “

Do people still think the musical chair quaterback scheme works? It didn’t work at all last year, it’s success rate in college football has to be very low, heck, even in baseball it doesn’t work(closer by commitee). But that he is picking one guy to start the year it good, as I think they will be more successful. Most of last season’s blame for lackluster offense should go to the offensive line, who rushed Potts and forced Phillips to make off-balance throws. Whoever gets picked will keep the job, and hopefully it is Archer as he, no doubt, has the highest ceiling.

“People got heated, got aggravated at me sometimes,” Cox said. “It happens. But then they realized it was for the better of the team and it was all good. It’s not personal, it’s football. When I demand something out of you, I’m not doing it to hear myself talk.“I’m not a very confrontational person by nature. I wasn’t trying to show anybody up. I just don’t want to look back one day and say I could have done something more and didn’t do it.”My boy, D-Cox. I can remember last year, when not only was he the most polite player, I got quotes like “If we pay attention in the team meetings, you know, we shouldn’t have any problems”. What a transformation after becoming the team captain as a Junior, and now seems to be the defensive team leader. That secondary will be good this year, with Cox at one of the corner spots and one of our only players that didn’t redshirt, true sophomore Max Harris, at the other, a player known for his hard hitting. The safties also should be very good, with Western Michigan transfer Robert Livingston taking over the free safety spot, and described in the media guide as the “Quarterback of the defense”, and one of our only other true sophomores, speedster David Caldwell locking down the strong safety spot.

“I set pretty high goals for myself in everything I do.  I don’t know if I would say I was a long shot, but it’s a lot tougher coming from a different position into the quarterback race.  Especially if the other two have so much experience and have won big games for us.  I like being the underdog.  It gives you a little more motivation. “

If this quote coming from RJ Archer doesn’t explain why I believe he needs to be QB, I don’t know what does. He obviously isn’t scared of a challenge and will come out firing if chosen as it may be the only chance he gets with Schmand coming into contention in 1-2 years.
