Towson Knocks Off Tribe at the Hall, 73-60

Posted by TTHS on December 6th, 2006

An ugly game.

Positives

Schneider is dynamite. He got another 18 tonight, 5-9 from the floor and 4-8 from 3. He is easily the best player on the team, and I am ecstatic I get to see him for 4 years.

Kyle Carrabine got another 10, 3-6 from 3 in only 18 minutes. He is becoming a great role player.

Payton had another good game, getting 16 and 4 boards off the bench. He and Schneider carried the team tonight, and I really wish their effort had been rewarded.

2/1 Assist to turnover ratio, a much-need change. Also, we shot 77% from the charity stripe.

Negatives

Corey Cofield plays 4 minutes, scoring none. What on earth is going on with him?

Laimis Kisielius decided he didn’t feel like playing tonight, going scoreless and 0-6 from the floor.

Payton, Carrabine, Schneider-44
Everybody else-16

27% from 3, 35% from the floor, and THAT is why we lost.

Oh well, we should crush North Florida on Friday night, and that should be an easy W. They are 324 in the Pomery rating.

Go Tribe.

I agree with you, “Schneider is dynamite.”

I love his energy and aggressiveness and God bless him for hitting some shots.

But he is a freshman and we shouldn’t get too excited yet. So far all he has done is score 18 points twice — both times in losses. Scoring in losses is much different from scoring in wins.

It takes a team to win. Individual stats are important but they are even more important when they point to what it takes for the team to win. I’m sure the coaching staff is all over this already, but the first 7 games show that roughly what it takes for the Tribe to win is for Liamis to score 20 and AP to score 10. That scoring by those two is an indicator that the TEAM is playing well — not just that the two of them are playing well. If Liamis had scored 20 and AP 10 in every game the Tribe would have won virtually every game. Juniors and Seniors cannot escape their responsibilities toward the team. When they play well, that means the team is playing well. So far when David scores his 18 points, it just indicates he is playing well.

To win we need five guys who play well enough together to bring home a win. So far only one group of five have shown they can win: Liamis, AP, Nathan Mann, Trum, and Pete Stein. They may not be the best players but somehow this group works.

There is probably another group of five that can be productive and David should probably lead that group. The trick is find that group and for the five of them to be productive.

I also agree that the big men need to produce more. In their defense, though, the guards and forwards have got to throw the ball into them once a big guy has established position. It is hard to establish position and when you do there is nothing more discouraging than not getting the ball. Stop just faking the ball inside, pass it in!

Also, too often guards are passing the ball to big guys as they run down to get in position. Guards are supposed to know what to do with the ball, not just pass it to the nearest friendly jersey at the first sign of trouble. Pass the ball only to a teamate when and where that teamate can use the ball.

Finally, everyone has got to stop the “3 second pause.” This is when the team is passing the ball around and each player has to hold the ball for three seconds before deciding what to do. All this pausing just gives the defense a chance to catch up. Vary the pause rhythm. If the guy before you has paused for 3 seconds, then when the next guy gets the ball he must do something with it immediately: pass, shoot or drive. Stop the 3 second pause!

And remember, any team that can come back from 13 down and win in OT are tough minded winners. The guys who accomplished that are the heart and soul of this team.

    Go Tribe!
